In transit

Last February, 29 Kapitolyo Art Space organized an open call for artists. We received over a hundred applications from emerging to established artists from all over the Philippines, and five stood out.

This exhibit, “In Transit,” is a showcase of our five winners – Ky Palisoc, Patrick Tiam, Resty Cagayat, Walther Ocampo, and Yanni Ysabel – with each artist exploring the theme of transition through their unique perspective and artistic practice.

For Ky Palisoc, a young artist from Rizal, self-discovery and womanhood become her canvas. The goat, symbolic of her birth year, undergoes transformations across her pieces, mirroring the artist’s personal journey. Like the creature, Palisoc embraces her dark femininity as she blossoms into adulthood.

Patrick Tiam, on the other hand, paints a stark reality: the tenacious hold of poverty even amidst relentless striving. Yet, a glimmer of hope emerges in his concept of home, a sanctuary where change can take root. Tiam also threads his personal transition into the narrative, reflecting on the passage from singlehood to married life.

Resty Cagayat, an artist known for his Filipina subjects, embarks on a stylistic adventure. He infuses contemporary elements into his familiar portrayal of women, showcasing their evolution alongside his evolving artistic expression.

Architect-artist Walther Ocampo uses geometry as his language for abstraction. His works feature interconnected shapes, constantly shifting and interacting within their womb-like platforms. This dynamic interplay reflects the ever-changing nature of ideas and the ongoing process of becoming.

For Iloilo-based Yanni Ysabel, the transition to early adulthood is depicted with fish as a metaphor for a mother figure. The young clings to the distant mother fish, hindering her own journey towards independence. This imagery reflects the bittersweet detachment that often occurs on the path to self-sufficiency.

Within “In Transit,” transitions flow like a river, ever-changing yet ever-present. Each artist’s journey reminds us: though change may be a rushing current, it sculpts the human experience.
